Maliotis Cultural Center presents
Join us for the unveiling of the exhibit “Hellenic Beauty”, a collection of 55 antique and contemporary ethnic Greek dolls, dressed in historically accurate textiles. The exhibit opening will feature a presentation by curator and creator of the exhibit, Dr. Diana Demetrulias who has graciously donated the exhibit to the Maliotis Cultural Center, and will be followed by a Greek dance and costume showcase as presented by the Metropolis of Boston Greek Dance Groups, as well as a hands-on creative crafting experience as children and adults are invited to create their own Greek folk costumes on paper dolls.Dr. Demetrulias is an active scholar with 60 refereed publications. She received eleven funded grants including a prestigious National Endowment of the Humanities grant. Funded by the Alexander S. Onassis Foundation, New York, she was awarded a grant for “Greeks in the Diaspora” that supported lectures by Richard Clogg, Oxford University scholar, for the purpose of expanding the American public’s knowledge of Hellenic civilization and Greece’s history, culture, and artistic accomplishments. She also received several grants from the California Arts Council. These grants funded Greek cultural exhibits in regional museums, Greek folk dance clinics and performances, and ethnographic oral history research. Dr. Demetrulias’s artistic accomplishments collectively demonstrate the courage, strength, and enduring Orthodox faith of Greek immigrants and their descendants in America. ... On Saturday, March 22nd, the HCHC Office of Student Life (OSL) together with the Student Government Association (SGA) organized a Lenten service project in partnership with the non-profit organization Rise Against Hunger. The service project gathered more than 70 HCHC students, staff, and members of the surrounding community in the Pappas Gymnasium of HCHC to reach the goal of packaging 10,000 meals for schoolchildren in need - a goal that was met and exceeded in just over an hour. These meals will soon be sent across the globe to those hardest hit by food insecurity and provide meals to children for a full school year.
The event commenced with a blessing by His Grace Bishop Anthony of Synada and a brief presentation by the Rise Against Hunger coordinator, Bill Maniscalco. Bill shared about how the global hunger crisis is growing, and that the HCHC community is providing impactful change to better the lives of our brothers and sisters around the world. It was particularly significant that this service project took place the same weekend the Orthodox Church celebrates the Sunday of the Holy Cross. It was a reminder that inward reflection is enhanced when there is also a keen focus outward towards the needs of our neighbor. With the success of this year’s Lenten service project, plans are already being made by the OSL for next year’s event with an even greater goal. Additionally, the OSL looks forward to fostering new initiatives and partnerships to grow the contributions of the HCHC community to our neighbors in need. ...
